Congressman Gonzalez and House China Task Force unveil report, policy recommendations to push back on China

Washington, September 30, 2020

U.S. Congressman Anthony Gonzalez joined his fellow co-chairs of the House China Task Force today to unveil their report detailing the malign actions of the People’s Republic of China and putting forth policy recommendations and legislative strategies to combat the threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party.

“I firmly believe that the Chinese Communist Party is one of the largest threats facing our country today, and if we hope to protect our future economic success and national security, we must take action now to significantly recalibrate our relationship with the People’s Republic of China and work to hold the Chinese Communist Party accountable on the global stage,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “From their persistent abuse of international organizations and agreements, to their neglect for the human rights of their own people and the deadly mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic that has now claimed the lives of over one million people, the Chinese Communist Party has demonstrated blatant irresponsibility and malign intent that cannot be allowed to continue unchecked to the detriment of the American people, our livelihoods, and our businesses.”

Congressman Gonzalez served as a co-chair of the pillars on Competitiveness, and Economics and Energy for the China Task Force and helped to craft and promote a number of policy and legislative proposals included in the report, including recommendations to promote U.S. leadership in emerging technologies and US influence around the world. Additionally, Congressman Gonzalez’s Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act, CONFUCIUS Act, and Accountability for World Bank Loans to China Act are all included in the report as recommended legislation for Congress to adopt. All three of these bills also passed the U.S. House of Representatives as part of the National Defense Authorization Act earlier this year.

For years, American leaders have tried to bring the Chinese Communist Party into the international community as a responsible partner by expanding our economic relationship with them and often turning a blind eye to their malign actions. As a result of this approach, the Chinese Communist Party in the past year alone has violated an international treaty by dismantling Hong Kong’s civil liberties, continued its oppression of ethnic minorities, including Uyghurs and Tibetans, increased its military buildup and belligerence and violated other nations’ sovereignty at sea, engaged in fatal skirmishes to conduct a land-grab on the Indian border, and silenced doctors and suppressed vital medical information from the world about COVID-19, allowing what could have been a local outbreak to turn into a global pandemic that has killed over one million people to date and devastated the world economy.

The China Task Force Report serves as a blueprint for realistic, achievable and multi-faceted actions Congress and the Administration can take now to help the United States best confront the growing threat of the Chinese Communist Party. Of the over 400 recommendations made in the report, two-thirds of the bills are bipartisan in nature, while one-third have already passed either the House or the Senate. In total, the China Task Force engaged with more than 130 leaders to provide insights and solutions for the comprehensive plan, which is broken down into six chapters: ideological competition, supply chain, national security, technology, energy and economics, and competitiveness.
